Аннотация: This book records invited lectures given at the workshop on Electronic Properties of Solids Using Cluster Methods, held at Michigan State University July 17-19, 1994. Cluster methods for solid-state studies were introduced a long time ago by Hans Bethe in his important work on the crystal field splitting of the energy levels of impurity ions in insulators [Ann. Physik 3, 133 (1929)]. More recently, it has been realized that the applicability of such an approach is far broader. The intent of the workshop was to bring together a small number of leaders in the field, to give an up-to-date picture of this breadth, as well as, of course, to assess the quality of the results obtained.

Аннотация: The aim of this book is to review of recent achievements in the theoretical investigations of the electronic structure, optical, MO, and XMCD properties of compounds and multilayered structures. Chapter 1 of this book is of an introductory character and presents the the-oretical foundations of the band theory of solids such as the density functional theory (DFT) for ground state properties of solids. Chapter 2 describes the MO properties for a number of 3d materials. Section 2.1 is devoted to the MO properties of elemental ferromagnetic metals (Fe, Co, and Ni) and paramagnetic metals in xternal magnetic .elds (Pd and Pt). Chapter 3 of the book presents the MO properties of f band ferromagnetic materials. In chapter 4 results of recent theoretical investigations on the MXCD in various representative transition metal 4f and 5f systems are presented.

Аннотация: This book explains modern and interesting physics in heavy-fermion (HF) compounds to graduate students and researchers in condensed matter physics. It presents a theory of heavy-fermion (HF) compounds such as HF metals, quantum spin liquids, quasicrystals and two-dimensional Fermi systems. The basic low-temperature properties and the scaling behavior of the compounds are described within the framework of the theory of fermion condensation quantum phase transition (FCQPT). Upon reading the book, the reader finds that HF compounds with quite different microscopic nature exhibit the same non-Fermi liquid behavior, while the data collected on very different HF systems have a universal scaling behavior, and these compounds are unexpectedly uniform despite their diversity. For the reader's convenience, the analysis of compounds is carried out in the context of salient experimental results. The numerous calculations of the non-Fermi liquid behavior, thermodynamic, relaxation and transport properties, being in good agreement with experimental facts, offer the reader solid grounds to learn the theory's applications. Finally, the reader will learn that FCQPT develops unexpectedly simple, yet completely good description of HF compounds.

Аннотация: Рассмотрены особенности протекания генерационно-рекомбинационных (ГР) процессов в полупроводниковых структурах, содержащих область пространственного заряда, в частности вопросы поведения кинетических коэффициентов, описывающих ГР в сильных электрических полях и с учетом электрон-фононного взаимодействия. Разбираются различные аспекты данных процессов при моно- и биполярной инжекции, в однородных и неоднородных структурах, стационарные и нестационарные. В связи с проблемами наноэлектроники описываются методы токовой диагностики параметров рекомбинационных центров, опирающиеся на исследование ГР процессов в активных элементах. ГР-процессы связаны с дефектообразованием как прямым, так и косвенным образом. В этой связи изучаются и вышеуказанные процессы. Построена удобная термодинамическая модель, описывающая дефектообразование взаимодействующих дефектов. В том числе исследованы варианты распада комплексов в областях пространственного заряда.Книга предназначена для специалистов, занимающихся проблемами физики, диагностики качества и надежности полупроводниковых приборов. Намеренно освещены достаточно подробно некоторые широко известные вопросы, что позволяет использовать монографию в качестве дополнительного учебного пособия по курсам "физика полупроводниковых приборов" и "физика активных элементов".
